To Iranian Australians - and especially those of you in Bradfield - I know many of you are living with unbearable fear right now. 

I’ve heard your heartbreaking stories of being unable to reach family in Iran. Of not knowing if the people you love are safe. No one should have to carry that pain. 

What is happening in Iran is devastating. Ordinary people are being met with brutal violence simply for seeking dignity, freedom, and the right to be heard. Lives are being taken. Families are being torn apart. And the fear being inflicted is deliberate. 

I want to be very clear: this is a brutal crackdown by an oppressive regime, and the violence being used against civilians cannot be justified. For those of us who live each day with the freedoms of a vibrant democracy, we cannot look away when those same freedoms are being violently denied to others.
