The Safeguard Mechanism requires Australia's largest greenhouse gas emitters to keep their net emissions below an emissions limit (a baseline).
Its full name is the Safeguard Mechanism (Crediting) Amendment Bill 2022. It was introduced to parliament on 30 November 2022 to amend a number of existing Acts. It's been in the news recently because the second reading debate started on 8 March 2023 and is continuing. Quite a few MPs have made speeches during the second reading debate. The Member for Bradfield has not made a speech. Members of the crossbench have proposed amendments.
