We keep talking about “affordable housing” — but Australia still doesn’t have a consistent national definition of what “affordable” means.
Governments fund it. Developers build it. And families are still priced out.
Young families are being priced out of the communities they grew up in. Grandparents are watching their families move away, because they simply can’t afford to stay. And essential workers who keep our schools, hospitals and aged care services running often can’t afford to live here.
We are told more supply will fix the problem. And yes — we do need more homes.
But governments have spent years funding “affordable housing” without consistently defining what affordable actually means.
If we can’t define affordable housing, how can we deliver enough of it?
It’s time for governments to set a clear standard and be accountable for the results.
Sign the petition to set a national definition, so when we say “affordable housing”, it means homes families can actually afford.
