20 Feb - Nicolette Boele MP backs fairer super reforms

Nicolette Boele MP, who represents Bradfield — one of Australia’s most affluent electorates — has signalled her support for the Treasury Laws Amendment (Building a Stronger and Fairer Super System) Bill 2026.

“Bradfield is full of people who worked hard, saved carefully and built successful lives under a set of economic rules that rewarded effort and enterprise,” Ms Boele said.

“They want their children and grandchildren to have that same opportunity.”

The legislation would reform super tax concessions so they are better targeted for large super balances, affecting fewer than 0.5% of accounts nationally.

Ms Boele said that following the hard work and advocacy of fellow community independents during the previous term of Parliament, important improvements had been made to the legislation before its reintroduction.

The updated Bill no longer applies tax on earnings above $3 million to unrealised gains, and both the $3 million and $10 million thresholds will now be indexed to ensure they remain proportionate over time, as Boele advocated for in October last year

“Superannuation was created to provide income in retirement. It was never designed to be a wealth accumulation or wealth transfer vehicle,” Ms Boele said.

“With housing affordability at crisis levels and younger Australians facing steeper economic barriers, we have to make sure today’s policy settings still create opportunity - not entrench advantage.”

Ms Boele, who has a background in finance and superannuation, said the reforms reflect responsible economic stewardship.

“These are sensible guardrails that make sure super continues to do what it was built to do.”

Ms Boele also supports the strengthened LISTO, having previously spoken in Parliament on the importance of updating its thresholds to safeguard long-term benefits for women and low-income earners.
