In 2013 the NDIS was introduced to provide every Australian with a disability that has a significant impact on their life the “reasonable and necessary” supports to help live an ordinary life.
Some have raised concerns about the cost of the scheme – in a few years it will support more than half a million Australians, and will overtake the cost of Medicare.
Yet many people still struggle to access the scheme, particularly Indigenous Australians, women, and people living in rural and remote Australia.
Beyond the NDIS, 3 out of every 4 Australians with disability have experienced discrimination because of their disability. For some people it is every day.
So, is Australia doing enough to support people living with disability? What is the impact of a fully funded NDIS? What role can a community independent for Bradfield play to make meaningful improvements for Australians living with disability?
As an independent candidate, Nicolette aims to be well researched, thorough, competent and considered through combining her own experience with input from members of the electorate, advisers and experts.
Join us at 7:30 pm on Tuesday 26 April for an interactive online event (via Zoom). We will hear from Jonathan Shar, CEO and Founder of Australian Disability Ltd, which exists to create a more equitable Australian society for people with disabilities through the production of online media and platforms to increase the visibility of issues facing the disability community, and Nicolette’s sister-in-law, Heike Fabig, CEO of the National Justice Project's Tech4Justice lab, which is building chatbots that guide people who have faced disability discrimination through the process of raising an effective complaint to the AHRC. Nicolette will also share her positions on disability rights and inclusion. Please come along and share your experience.
You will also have the opportunity to ask Nicolette questions about this critical policy area.
